" Hope in the past "
(film in development)
A film with marionettes, portraying the German Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin, composed of a succession of dreamy reminiscences from the author’s point of view.
Following Benjamin’s short story “ The Second Self “, the film also evokes the Kaiserpanorama, a 19th century device that was a predecessor to 3D film.
Structured as a frame within a frame, the Kaiserpanorama presents twelve images of a possible life that Benjamin could have lived.
Parallel to the search of lost time from Benjamin’s perspective, the commentaries of Hannah Arendt, Gershom Scholem and Theodor W. Adorno are weaved into the web of Benjamin’s memories. Their testimonies portray Benjamin as someone who sacrificed everything in order to follow his own star, by « swimming against all currents with the energy of despair ».
